Waistbeads consist of glass beads and crystal on string or wire worn around the waist and hips. They have been worn for centuries by women of West African cultures. In some African cultures, they symbolize femininity, fertility, sensuality and spiritual well-being. For Others, they are strictly worn as an accessory and for fashion.
Where are your waistbeads sourced from?
Most of Habibi Adornments waistbeads are handmade in our studio. Some are sourced from Ghana.
Can I wear waistbeads if I am not of African descent?
It is important that people of non-African descent know and share the origins of this beautiful and useful creation so that the history and culture behind it is not lost or misdirected.
Are your waistbeads removable?
All Habibi Adornment waistbeads are offered in traditional, meaning they are non elastic and do not come with clasps. They are strands that are tied meant to wear permanently and with intention. To remove them, you will need to cut them off. Sliding them over your head or down your body is highly not recommeded because you risk them breaking. They are also offered in elastic cord, meaning they stretch secured with a barrel clasp.
Can I perform normal daily activities while wearing my waistbeads?
Yes, eventually the waistbeads become an extention of you. You may bathe, exercise, swim, and sleep comfortably in them. However, be mindful of how tight and/ or how loose the waistbeads are tied onto you and where the sit on the body. If they are tied snug around your waistline, over-eating can cause discomfort and risk them popping. Also, if the waistbeads are tied lower on your hips, keep mindful when going to the bathroom not to pull forcefully down, as the might break.
